June Is National Aphasia Awareness Month!
If you would like to support stroke survivors living with aphasia, click the donate button below. All donations go towards Aphasia Network programs: Aphasia Camp Northwest: Adventure Weekend, Aphasia Couples Retreat, and the Aphasia Spring Workshop. The funds we receive are used to provide programs, scholarships, and the organizational support needed to maintain The Aphasia Network.
May Is National Stroke Awareness Month!
During Aphasia Camp Northwest 2016, our campers completed a philanthropic activity that included building twelve wood duck houses to be placed in Oregon forests. A few of our care partners cut lumber and packaged pieces into kits that could then be put together with hammers and nails. These wood duck houses were transported back to Portland Oregon where they were delivered to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in early September. Our campers love giving back to the community and sharing their skills to benefit others and promote conservation! A big thank you for the generous donation of materials and time from Mike & Toni Yuckert and Bob & Colleen Ayers.
Medical Student & Medical Professionals -
Aphasia Training at Couples Retreat
One of the most vital needs of persons with aphasia is effectively communicating with healthcare providers to obtain the services they need. AN is dedicated to improving this interaction from both sides – helping aphasia survivors’ communication skills and training medical professionals and students in these medical professions to effectively communicate with, and relate to, patients with aphasia.
Over the last four years, AN programs have helped train 258 students as well as 50 medical practitioners. These practitioners interact with, and treat, multiple stroke and TBI survivors each year. Each student will work with multiple aphasia survivors, continue to educate others in their field, and share their understanding of aphasia. The ripple effect of who these medical professionals and potential practitioners reach is exponential and an integral factor in changing the aphasia culture.
